According to the Ceske Budejovice legend the Black Tower stairways inspired Dr. James D. Watson during his visit on August 1946. Several years later he proposed the famous model for DNA structure. Department of Molecular Biology

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH BOHEMIA IN CESKE BUDEJOVICE

FACULTY OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
Address: Branisovska 31, 37005 Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic

The Department of Molecular Biology was established on January 1st, 2002, separating from the original Department of General Biology. Its members ( see the founding meeting ) are experienced scientists in this field. The common feature of all projects is functional gene analysis performed on various model systems (Drosophila and other insects, C. elegans, trypanosomes). Students in Ph.D. and M.Sc. programs are trained in the latest methods of molecular genetics including mutagenesis, RNA interference, transgenic organisms and cell cultures. The Department has technical support from the Entomological and Parasitological Institutes.

The Impact of Science on Art:

In 1963 Salvador Dalí made a painting called Galacidalacidesoxyribonucleicacid (click on the name to see the painting), in which he depicted his love and respect for the science and arts. He honors here the discovery of DNA, the beauty in the complexity of life, and of course, his wife Gala (oil on canvas, 305 x 345 cm, The Salvador Dalí Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida).
